    Overview
This course focuses on the development of the nurse practitioner (NP) role from its inception, including advances in education and practice. In the 60 years since the first formal educational program was created, NPs have overcome barriers and gained political advocacy skills while becoming highly valued healthcare providers. By having a better understanding of our shared history, nurse practitioners will be in a stronger position to confront the challenges of both the present and future.

    Objectives
    • Identify when and where the nurse practitioner (NP) role was originated and the founders of the first NP program.
    • Relate the original purpose of the NP role.
    • Compare early NP education to that of NPs today.
    • Summarize three achievements of national NP organizations.
