Overview Communicating serious, upsetting or life-changing news to a patient may be one of the most difficult conversations a nurse practitioner (NP)will ever have. While it can be said that no person is truly ever "ready" or "comfortable" delivering this type of news, we can take steps to increase our self- awareness and learn how to communicate difficult or distressing news. The purpose of this presentation is to offer the NP practical guidance and tools for the difficult conversations each of us will likely have with a patient. The intended outcome is that the NP will gain self-confidence and practical tools that can be used in the sensitive and skillful delivery of bad or upsetting news.
Objectives
- Identify one or more protocols or mnemonics the nurse practitioner can use when delivering unfavorable information.
- Identify three strategies the nurse practitioner can utilize to respond to a patient's emotions and responses when disturbing news is communicated.
- Identify stressors that may impact how the nurse practitioner communicates and explore three strategies that can be used to decrease the stress.
- Equip the NP, both novice and expert, with an increased sense of confidence when breaking bad news.
