Overview The transgender community has suffered, either in silence or at the hands of others due to mistreatment, victimization, harassment, and discrimination. Although there has been an increase in awareness to the healthcare needs of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, patients who identify as transgender continue to encounter high levels of mistreatment when seeking healthcare. Approximately one-third of patients have reported experiencing at least one negative experience related to being transgender in the healthcare setting, while one-quarter chose not to seek out the healthcare they needed due to the fear of being mistreated. This presentation provides the audience with a general overview of how to provide inclusive and affirming care to patients who hold gender diverse backgrounds in the primary care setting. Particular importance on the following concepts will be addressed: terminology, discussion of the health inequities and disparities gender diverse patients face, resources and strategies to provide an inclusive and affirming environment, discussion of required criteria for gender affirming hormone therapy and its impact on patients who hold gender diverse backgrounds, hematological parameters specific to such population, gender affirming garments clinicians may encounter within the healthcare setting, and lastly an overview of gender affirming surgeries across the gender spectrum.
Objectives
- Define various key terms and concepts related to people who hold gender diverse backgrounds.
- Describe the major healthcare disparities and inequities people who hold gender diverse backgrounds face.
