Overview Clinicians with expertise in the care of patients with overweight and obesity will prepare Nurse practitioners (NPs) and PAs who complete all 10 modules in this Obesity Bootcamp to establish evidence-based obesity management practices in a variety of settings. Further, healthcare professionals completing the series will earn an Intermediate Obesity Management Certificate.
Module 1 As obesity rates have increased, so have stereotypes and biases about individuals with obesity. This module addresses the epidemiology and risk factors of obesity as a disease and examines obesity bias & stigma and strategies to reduce obesity bias in clinical practice. Addressing obesity stigma and bias is essential for health care providers to ensure the health of their patients with obesity is not negatively impacted by weight discrimination.
Module 2
Obesity is a chronic disease with genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors all contributing to its development and persistence. This module explains the mechanism by which each of these factors uniquely affects weight gain, the ability to effectively lose weight, and how the pathology of each contribute to commonly associated co-morbid conditions and complications.
Module 3
This module starts with screening and evaluation for obesity and continues through the obesity-specific exam. Using AACE-ACE criteria she identifies the complications of obesity and the necessary interventions and additional testing to reduce morbidity and mortality in patients with overweight or obesity.
Module 4
This module will discuss the Four Pillars of treatment, and how stigma and bias influence patients with obesity and overweight. The obesity expert faculty will help differentiate appropriate eating plans utilizing People First language, and how to implement physical activities in treatment using the FITTE model. Additionally, she will demonstrate motivational interviewing techniques to assist the patient to set personalized goals including a 5-step strategy for therapy selection.
Module 5
This module will detail the currently available bariatric surgeries and procedures and the mechanism by which each works. The obesity expert faculty will review the expected outcomes, common complications and contraindications, and finally, suggested post-intervention follow up including nutrition and supplements, monitoring and changes often realized in co-morbid conditions such as diabetes, and hypertension.
Module 6
In this module, the obesity expert faculty will demonstrate various communication strategies to facilitate behavior change and the impact these styles can have on patient health outcomes. She will also review the following components of behavior change - 5 A's, Motivational interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Transtheoretical model/stages of change, and Positive psychology.
Module 7 - Part I, Part II, Part III
In this 3-part module, multiple obesity expert faculty will detail how the healthcare provider may establish an obesity practice in a variety of settings, including addressing the environment of care, billing an coding, and finally, offering practical tips for introducing this care model to patients utilizing a case-study approach.
Module 8
Expert faculty work through and discuss four case studies applying the skills and techniques learned from modules one through seven. This interactive module ties it all together from assessment, diagnosis, and treatment strategies to communication skills, special populations and billing & coding. Practice evidence-based care by answering knowledge checks throughout the activity and apply what you have learned in these cases.
