Overview The importance of prudent pain management cannot be overstated. This presentation will discuss the differences and similarities between opioid and non-opioid analgesics. Basic pharmacology of the two groups of analgesics along with clinical indications for each group will be discussed along with guidelines for appropriate prescribing. Emphasis will be placed on when one type of analgesic would be preferred over another.
Objectives
- Describe the role of pain receptors, with regards to the mechanism of action of pain medications, both opioid and non-opioid.
- Review non-opioid pain medications in the treatment of pain.
- Evaluate the appropriate use of opioid pain medications in the treatment of pain.
