Overview Optimizing sleep in cancer survivors is an essential component to improving quality of life and overall health when living with and/or recovering from the effects of cancer treatment. Sleep-wake disturbances in cancer survivors is nearly three times higher than the general population with up to 95% complaining of sleep disturbances. Sleep improves mood and physical functioning, regulates hormones, and reduces disease risk. Sleep also improves cognition, cancer-related fatigue, and overall immune system functioning. Current research on sleep physiology and impacts of sleep deprivation, circadian rhythms, sleep-wake disturbances, and evidence-based strategies for mastering a good night's sleep will be discussed. Objectives
- Discuss the complexities surrounding sleep-wake disturbances in oncology.
- Understand the intersection of health, safety and sleep.
- Review strategies for assessing sleep-wake disturbances.
- Identify approaches for managing sleep-wake disturbances in cancer survivors.
