Overview The interplay of chronic pain and mental health issues is well established. While cognitive behavioral therapy has been the gold standard for the treatment of mood disorders in patients with chronic pain, accessibility and patient willingness can deter the implementation of CBT in this vulnerable population. Nurses practitioners have a unique opportunity in their daily interactions with patients to help them understand why certain interventions may help their mental health and their pain, why these strategies may be recommended, and resources that can break down the barriers to access. While CBT is one great option, other resources and approaches are available. Treating a patient's mental health is a crucial component of holistic pain management. Objectives
Describe the relationship between chronic pain and mental health issues.
Identify 3 evidence based interventions for patients suffering with anxiety and depression.
Review the cognitive distortions addressed with cognitive behavioral therapy and use these to direct motivational interviewing and coaching of the client.
