Overview Antimicrobial stewardship is a system-wide approach to promoting and overseeing the safe and judicious use of antimicrobials. These standards protect patients of all ages from harm caused by unnecessary antibiotic use and combat antibiotic resistance. However, their use is not universal and has diminished during the COVID pandemic. Nurse practitioners can play a significant role in increasing adherence to antibiotic standards in all healthcare settings, from the NICU to long term care, improving clinical outcomes.
Objectives
- Discuss untoward effects of antibiotic use.
- Define antibiotic stewardship.
- Identify goals of antibiotic stewardship programs.
- Identify current patterns of microbial resistance.
- Analyze population-based antibiotic prescribing practices.
- Describe tenants of appropriate antibiotic use.
